Since the 1950s, Varian, Inc. has been an integral player in the
vacuum technologies space, establishing the company as a pioneer
and worldwide supplier of total vacuum solutions.
| 1957: |
Varian Associates, Inc. invents the Nobel VacIon pump, the
first electronic device to operate without fluids or moving
parts and resistant to power failures. |
| 1959: |
Varian Associates, Inc. creates its Vacuum Division to handle
the emerging product lines. |
| 1960: |
Varian Associates, Inc.’s first vacuum system is delivered
to RCA and the first 5,000-liter-per-second pump delivered to
the Atomic Energy Commissions’ Oak Ridge National Laboratory
for studies of controlled fusion. |
| 1961: |
Varian Associates’ Vacuum Division introduced the ConFlat®
Flanges, setting the industry standard for vacuum flange performance. |
| 1967: |
New headquarters of Varian SpA opens in Turin, Italy. CERN,
the European nuclear research organization, selects Varian Vacion
pumps for its operation. |
| 1971: |
Varian Associates, Inc. signs an agreement to purchase Norton
Vacuum Equipment Division in Newton, MA and Sunnyvale, CA. Ribbon-cutting
ceremony takes place for the opening of the Lexington Vacuum
plant. |
| 1972: |
Varian Associates’ Vacuum Division introduces the Contra-Flow®
concept, allowing higher test port pressures by using a simplified
vacuum system design. |
| 1983: |
Varian Associates’ Vacuum Division develops the StarCell®
Ion Pump and establishes Torino, Italy as the center for ion
pump research and development. |
| 1986: |
Varian Associates, Inc. introduces its first turbo molecular
pump in cooperation with the Elettrorava Company. Varian Associates,
Inc. acquires Elettrorava Company, expanding its vacuum business. |
| 1992: |
Varian Associates’ Vacuum Division introduces the Helitest
Leak Detector, with numerous applications in non-vacuum industries.
It also developed the MacroTorr concept in turbo pump technology,
which allowed pumps to work at 100 times higher foreline pressure. |
| 1998: |
Varian Associates, Inc. develops its TriScroll® Dry Pumps,
employing a unique, patented TriScroll pumping capability, the
only two-stage vacuum pumps on the market at the time. |
| 2002: |
Varian, Inc. expands its vacuum campus in Turin, Italy to
add more space for research and development capabilities. |
