Research and Development
In universities and government laboratories around the world, vacuum
is an enabling technology for high-energy physics applications such
as particle accelerators. Particle accelerators require high vacuum,
equivalent to conditions in outer space, in order to avoid collisions
with gas molecules as the atoms are accelerated. This market is
relatively low growth and depends upon government funding. Synchrotron
accelerator research laboratories around the world have been expanding
their infrastructure for studying proteins, chemicals, and innovative
medical applications.
