HPLC Detectors

Varian HPLC detectors range from a standard, single-channel UV-Vis detector for basic analysis to multi-wavelength detectors for research applications. For the ultimate in UV-Vis detection, the powerful 335 Diode Array Detector provides full spectral information of every peak in a sample. All UV-Vis detectors are designed to maximize reliability, performance and value, with features like optimized flow cell designs to minimize RI effects.

340 Variable-Wavelength Detector

The economical 340 is designed for high performance and simple operation. Wavelength is manually selected, and autozero can be performed from either the front panel of the detector or from a contact closure initiated by a remote device.

Performance

  • Measures optical absorbance over a wavelength range of 190 to 800 nm -- Precision designed optics combined with a prealigned deuterium lamp provide sensitivity to 0.005 AU. An optional tungsten lamp allows operation at wavelengths above 380 nm.
  • Simple operation -- Front and rear panel (contact closure) controls are included for event mark and autozero.
  • A wide variety of flow cells, from microbore through preparative, are available in both stainless steel and Kel-F to address the needs of a wide variety of applications.

355 Refractive Index Detector

The Varian ProStar 355 refractive index (RI) detector is engineered to be the most stable and sensitive analytical RI detector in the laboratory today. This universal detector is ideal for the analysis of non-absorbing compounds such as polymers, hydrocarbons, carbohydrates, alcohols, and fatty acids. The ProStar 355 detector has excellent thermal stability and automated reference flushing to meet the most demanding
analytical applications.

The ProStar 355 combines low noise with active flow cell temperature control to provide a low drift baseline, resulting in outstanding detection limits. Flow cell thermostating eliminates 99.9% of the temperature effect on the RI baseline.

Performance Features

  • Digital control of the optical zero makes it quick and easy to zero.
  • Polarity reversal is tied to the electronic autozero. When a polarity change is made, the detector will automatically adjust the baseline so that there is no baseline upset.
  • Automation of optical and electronic autozero and reference flush functions make the 355 an ideal detector for overnight automated analysis.

363 Fluorescence Detector

Fluorescence spectroscopy enjoys two distinct benefits over UV-Vis spectroscopy-increased sensitivity and enhanced selectivity. Sensitivity is dramatically increased by looking for a fluorescence signal against a dark background. Selectivity is achieved by selecting both the excitation and emission wavelengths to screen out unwanted interferences. Varian's ProStar 363 Fluorescence Detector maximizes sensitivity and selectivity to give you total control over your analyses.

The ProStar 363 provides the highest sensitivity by using a continuous Xenon lamp. Continuous lamps generate a significantly more stable signal than flashlamps. Consequently, drift and noise are dramatically reduced. The unique optical design of the ProStar 363 permits simultaneous measurement of both emission and excitation signals, thus accurately correcting for lamp fluctuations. The combination of the lamp and optics provide the quietest signal possible, resulting in more reproducible fluorescent measurements.
