NMR Processing Speeds Of Various Sun Workstations
Studies using Varian's VNMR software have indicated a strong (essentially 100%) correlation between floating point performance, as measured by the industry-standard SPECfp92 rating, and performance over a wide variety of "NMR tasks". Of course, disk speed plays a role for processes which are disk intensive (large multi-dimensional Fourier transforms), and the amount of memory also plays a role, as does the speed of the graphics controller, but these factors tend to be of distinctly less importance.
General UNIX operations (user interaction, shell scripts, etc.) are dominated by the integer performance of the system, see our separate listing.
A listing of some of the many Sun computers which can be used to run VNMR as spectrometer host follows. Note that the different generations of SPECfp performance tests are not mutually compatible: the newest test suite does not even run on old computers with little memory, while the old suites may run entirely in the secondary cache of a current workstation and therefore not produce realistic results. This means that one cannot calculate SPECfp95 values from SPECfp92 results, etc. - the sequence of workstations in the listing below is therefore an estimated one.
