Varian's VnmrSGI™ software runs on virtually all old and new UNIX workstations from Silicon Graphics, Inc. (SGI). In particular, current generation workstations running IRIX are quite reasonable to run VNMR. There are virtually no constraints:
-
Any memory configuration is fine
Whatever memory is acceptable to run the particular version of the operating system will also run VnmrSGI in an acceptable way. Little or no improvement is experienced with increased memory.
-
Any disk configuration is fine
VnmrSGI, including the Adobe Acrobat-based on-line manuals, occupies about 150 MB of disk space. The major reason for disk space is the ability to process large 2D and 3D data sets and is rarely if ever constrained by VnmrSGI itself.
-
Any screen configuration is fine
VnmrSGI uses only 8-bit color, so 24-bit color is not necessary (though it is compatible, of course). Larger screens are always nice, but VnmrSGI is perfectly usable on a 17" monitor.
-
CD-ROM drive required for installation
VnmrSGI software is on the VNMR CD. However, remote installation, including heterogeneous remote installation, is fully supported. This means that if you want to install software on a particular SGI computer which does not have the appropriate CD-ROM drive, you are fine as long as any other networked workstation, whether Sun, SGI, or IBM, is configured with an appropriate CD-ROM drive.
Varian is not an authorized reseller of SGI workstations. Although special arrangements can always be made for customers who absolutely require a single purchase order, we strongly prefer customers to purchase SGI workstations through their local SGI representative.
