Sun Workstation Configurations
Standard Configurations
Sun computers are available in a wide variety of combinations of speed, disk size, memory, monitor size, etc. On the Varian price list are a variety of standard configurations which we have selected to cover a wide range of price/performance, and to meet the varying needs of our users. Systems being used for walk-up "push-button" operation in 15-minute segments can satisfy their computer requirements with an inexpensive yet powerful Blade 150 with a 17" monitor. Users analyzing nD spectra of proteins for 8 hours a day probably will want a high-end (Blade 2500) system with a 22" monitor, for high field systems we do recommend Sun's LCD Digital Color Monitors.
The configurations below are stocked by Varian, so that we can provide the best possible delivery. Any workstation in any configuration found on the Sun price list can be purchased from Sun, but must be configured as laid out in section 3.10 of the Installation Planning manual.

Required Accessories for Spectrometer Hosts
The Varian NMR System, UNITY INOVA, MERCURY, MERCURY-Vx, MERCURYplus, and GEMINI 2000 use an Ethernet link for the communication between the host computer and the console (acquisition computer). For stand-alone spectrometers this can be done via the built-in Ethernet port.
If the system also is to be connected to a local network, a second Ethernet interface (PCI card) or a router is required. Varian supports and sells one Ethernet router and two SUN PCI cards, one with SCSI ports and one without:
- Linksys EtherFast Cable/DSL Router with 8 Ports (Varian P/N 01-914040-00),
- Sun's X1150A (GigaSwift 10/100/1000BaseT Ethernet) PCI expansion board (Varian P/N 01-911649-00), or alternatively
- Sun's X2222A (dual 10/100BaseT + dual fast/wide UltraSCSI) PCI expansion board (Varian P/N 01-911648-00), if external SCSI devices (such as disks or tape drives) are to be connected.
The router offers the added benefit of better protection against intruder attacks via the network connection (if set up accordingly). For host computer retrofits on HAL-based spectrometers see below.
Retrofits
HAL board based systems (UNITYplus, UNITY, VXR-S) cannot be retrofitted with Sun Blade computers. Check with Sun Microsystems for a used or re-manufactured Ultra 5, Ultra 10, Ultra 30, Ultra 60 or Ultra 80 workstation - all these models have been discontinued. If your system is a VXR-S or UNITY, your console may need to be retrofitted with a newer HAL board with DMA capability; please check with Varian before attempting to just swap in a new computer! With the exception of the Ultra 30, Ultra 60 and Ultra 80 workstations you will need to use an extra SCSI board (such as Sun's X2222A PCI card) to interface to the console. Note that all of Sun's computers are now PCI based; S-Bus cards will not work on recent Sun workstations.
Accessories
For the computers listed above a number of accessories (memory, disks, tape and floppy drives) have been incorporated into our price lists. Information on these accessories is found on separate pages:
